Fibromyalgia is a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. It is called a syndrome rather than a disease because there is no specific diagnostic test that confirms its existence.
There is no known cause or cure. Rather, it is a confusing and frustrating collection of symptoms, which come and go and vary in intensity. Its main symptom is widespread pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons, stiffness, fatigue and poor non-restorative sleep.
Although it is not a life-threatening condition, it is debilitating and sufferers will often have to change their lifestyle to be able to cope with day to day pain and tiredness.
Although there is no cure, Fibromyalgia can be effectively treated and managed. Treatments aim at improving the quality of sleep and reducing pain. Recent research confirms that a multidisciplinary approach to treating Fibromyalgia provides most relief and the best prognosis. This approach includes improving the quality of sleep, physical conditioning, proper nutrition, deep relaxation and positive mental imagery. By combining therapies, the patient can often return to a much healthier state and a more active lifestyle.
Hypnotherapy, along with a good diet and gradual gentle exercise will take you a long way into recovery, and should enable you to start feeling like you are getting your life back.
Treatment for fibromyalgia usually takes 10 – 12 sessions. The first 3 sessions are weekly and then the sessions go fortnightly. This enables your body to make changes between appointments. I can also teach you strategies to help you deal with pain and will teach you some self-hypnosis. I provide recordings which are listened to between sessions.
